Game Guide: Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly

The story behind Universal creating this game:
This is the first Spyro game that was created for the Playstation 2 console. Insomniac Games began the work for this game before the Playstation 2 came out and they were formatting it for the Playstation 1. When the Playstation 2 was announced, Insomniac decided that they wanted to format their new Spyro game for the playstation 2, but they needed to learn the formatting. So they let their partner in the previous 3 games, Universal Interactive take over the rest of making the Spyro game while Insomniac learned the format. Now Universal make Spyro for this reason.

The Game guide:

This guide will cover everything in every level of Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly. Included in this guide is everything you need to know about gems, dragonflies, how many dragonflies you need to enter each level, enemies, and the mini games and puzzles.

The story:
Just after the Year of the Dragon festival, The new baby dragons are receiving their dragonflies. All dragons need dragonflies, They are the source of a dragon’s immortality if they are fed enough. It’s a big party.

Suddenly, Ripto appears (this guy doesn’t give up, does he?). He uses his magic to make all of the new dragonflies disappear, but they get scattered around the worlds.

Spyro must gather all of the dragonflies and defeat Ripto and his minions, the riptocs.

Breath abilities and lives:
Bianca (a friend of Spyro’s) has made it possible for Spyro to breathe more than fire whenever he wants to, not just when he gets a power-up. She has given him a new ability as well. Her magic isn’t strong enough to just let Spyro have these abilities, so he has to find stones that are hidden throughout the worlds and put them in a special statue in Dragon Realms to receive the ability. These abilities are: bubble breath, electric breath, Ice breath, and wing shield. Bubble breath is needed to catch dragonflies, electric breath is needed to open one gate and start machines, ice breath is needed to open one gate and freeze some enemies( and friends as well) to do certain tasks. Wing shield is needed for some enemies who can’t be killed by any of your attacks. These enemies can be killed by their own weapons which will bounce off of your wings and go back to the enemies. Sometimes you may need to move back and forth to get the weapons to bounce in the right direction.

You start the game with 4 lives. To get more lives, you can either kill 8 of the small animals running around, or you can find a glass jar that contains a butterfly. Unlike previous games, there are many jars and they all are back when you return to a world.

Every world has 10 dragonflies and there are 9 worlds. Each world has a different number of gems, but they all total 7,000.

All world except Dragon Realms have 2 portals with puzzles, speedways,a vehicle, or slides in them.

The Worlds:

Dragon Realms:

This is where you begin the game. It is also the home world of the game. Unlike the other games, Enter the Dragonfly only has one world in which you can use to go to the other worlds. There are 800 gems to be found here and no enemies. There are two gates here: one has to be opened with electric breath, one has to be opened with ice breath. The 10 dragonflies here are some of the easiest to get. You get one dragonfly for each of the following tasks: front of the castle, Hunter’s lesson, buzzing heat, buzzing cold, flame challenge, ice challenge, lightning challenge, down by the bay, balloon’s shadow, and beyond the gate.

Dragonfly Dojo:
To enter the Dojo, you must have captured one dragonfly.
There are 700 gems here and the enemies are small riptocs that can be killed in any way, and large riptocs that can only be flamed. The dragonflies can be found: release the elder dragons, on the loose, in the mists, in the corridor, baby dragons(give kites back), on the lonely island, climbing steps, dojo time trial, dojo race, and the tank game. The portals are a speedway and a tank game.

Crop Circle Country:
To enter the Country, you must have captured 6 dragonflies.
There are 800 gems here and the enemies are space cows with lasers and large rynocs in space suits with lasers. Here, electricity is your friend. You should keep it activated at all times. Dragonfly locations are: in the pasture, on the loose, up the broken bridge, cow herding, UFOs attack, free the cows, super-flame challenge, cow abduction 1, cow abduction 2, and platform panic. The portals take you to a platform puzzle and the area where you can control a spaceship.

Luau Island:
To enter the Island, you must have captured 15 dragonflies.
There are 900 gems here and the enemies are large riptocs, tikis, and scooba riptocs. Scooba riptocs can only be killed by charging, as breath abilities don’t work under water, the other enemies can be flamed. The 10 dragonflies are: behind the statue, mountaintop, chill the pig, in the hoosegow(prison), landslide, tiki fire breath, on the loose, mantaray, drum song 1, and drum song 2. The two portals are a memory puzzle where you play a song, and the area where you get to drive the mantaray.

Cloud 9:
To enter Cloud 9, you must have captured 25 dragonflies.
There are 800 gems here and enemies are thunderclouds, large rynocs, and rynocs that shoot arrows. Fire breath is the best here. Dragonflie locations are: at the clock tower, around the way, thundercloud attack, hourglass challenge, lip of the clock, on the loose, pillar to pillar, rainbow time trial, rainbow race, and Spitfire-sky base. The portals are a speedway and an area where you fly the spitfire plane.

Monkey Monastary:

To enter the Monastary, you must have captured 35 dragonflies.
there are 900 gems here and the enemies are elephants, large riptocs with clubs, and large riptocs with snowballs. the elephants and the riptocs with the clubs can be flamed, butthose with snowballs have to be frozen and then charged. the 10 dragonflies here are: on the loose, save the yetis, on the ledge, locked in a chest, huntin’ wiptocs, on the ice, behind the doors, ice slide 1, ice slide 2, and spitfire-factories. The slide is the only one where there are 2 different ways to go down. you get one dragnfly for each way down. There is also another area were you can fly the spitfire plane.

Honey Marsh:
To enter the Marsh, you must have caotured 45 dragonflies.
There are 800 gems in this level and the enemies are bees, beehives, riptocs with banjos, and riptocs with lasers. All can be flamed. The 10 dragonflies here are: treetops, locked in a chest, get the big beehives, honey stills, thief chase, around the bend, on the loose, waling the planks, honeyslide, and tank course.
there is a slide and a tank course here, but I can’t get the tank course no matter how hard I try!

Thieve’s Den:
To enter the Den, you must have captured 55 dragonflies.
There are 700 gems here There is one type of enemy, the Wizard, which you have to use your wing shied to defeat, and after you kill one, it doesn’t come back. The other enemies are gems and baskets, which all run away from you. The 10 dragonflies here are: defeat the wizard riptocs, locked in a chest, ice challenge, on the loose, over the edge, chopping block, the lantern perch, oasis time trial, oasis race, and platform pandemonium. There is a speedway and a platform course here.

Jurrassic Jungle:

To enter the Jungle, you must have captured 65 dragonflies.
There are 600 gems here and three types of enemies, one type that you can electrocute, one type that you have to freeze, and one type on the lava that you have to freeze. The type that you have to freeze and is not on the lava won’t come back after you kill them. The type that you have to electrocute can also be frozen, so I recommend keeping your ice breath activated. Dragonfly locations are: recover lost pieces, lightning challenge, locked in a chest, thief chase, attack of the caveman, inside the temple, on the lava, lava slide, tower, and one other that I can’t figure out what it is! There is a slide and a puzzle where you have to get to the top of the tower and avoid all the enemies.

My Review of Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly:

This game was the worst game I have ever played! Insomniac should have kept the game and waited to release it instead of giving it to Universal. The layout of the game is completly different from the other Spyro games. I can’t believe they have a level where you actually help those annoying thieves!

The worst part about this game was the glitches. It’s like they never even tested this game!

Glitches that I have come across include: white lines across the screen, complete freezing, and half of Jurrassic jungle disappearing.

Also the load times are incredibly slow.

I would recommend not buying this game. Bypass it and go straight to “A Hero’s Tale”.
